The divine event is depicted in terms of simple yet extraordinary humanity, exemplified by the hand gestures and sweet facial expressions. Barocci intended to present this supernatural event in an everyday context, making it seem more realistic and therefore more effective in promoting the didactic nature of art in the Counter-Reformation.
