| Named after the San Damiano church near Assisi, Italy, this cross is a replica of one from which Christ spoke to St. Francis. The icon image is mounted on a solid wood cross and base.
This cross is filled with imagery and prominent Biblical figures. Surrounding Christ are the five major witnesses to His crucifixion: Mary the Mother of Jesus, St. John the Beloved, Mary Magdalene, Mary the Mother of James, and the centurion. The two smaller figures are Longinus, the Roman soldier who pierced the side of Jesus and Stephaton, the soldier who offered Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar wine. Around Jesus' hands are six angels and six patron saints of Umbria (the region of Italy where Assisi is located): St. John, St. Michael, St. Rufino, St. John the Baptist, St. Peter and St. Paul.
