The Church traces the origins of the Rosary back to St. Dominic and celebrates the Feast of the Holy Rosary on October 7, in commemoration of the Christian victory at Lepanto in 1571. On the same day as the naval battle at Lepanto the Rosary confraternity in Rome was celebrating the Rosary with a Rosary procession. It is because of this timing that the battle victory was attributed to Our Lady and the Rosary and Pope Pius V ordered it become the feast day of the Holy Rosary. The Rosary is an extremely popular devotion and was highly regarded by Pope John Paul II.
From the traditional 5 decade Rosary has developed a smaller chaplet, similar to the Rosary, in that it is used to keep track of your prayers. There are various chaplets for specific devotions to saints, Mary and Jesus. Some of the well-known chaplet devotions are the St. Michael chaplet and the Divine Mercy chaplet.
