The Liturgical cycle breaks the calendar year up into several liturgical seasons. Various liturgical prayers and liturgical readings signify each liturgical season. Scripture passages for each day during the liturgical year are specified by a list called a lectionary. The typical liturgical seasons of the Roman or Latin Rite of the Catholic Church are Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time (following the Epiphany), Lent, Easter, Ordinary Time (following Pentecost) and The Assumption of Mary.
