Advent (ad-venio in Latin or "to come to") is a time of preparation for the Lord's birth on Christmas. Advent is the beginning of the Church year and is comprised of the four Sundays before Christmas ending on Christmas Eve and is marked by special advent devotions. During Advent we are called to prepare for the anniversary of the Lord's coming to Bethlehem; His final coming at the end of the world; and His coming into our hearts today. A popular advent devotion is the lighting of the Advent wreath on each Sunday during Advent. A very popular Advent devotion for children is the Advent calendar along with many Advent activities. To prepare oneself spiritually for Jesus' birth, Advent prayers are used to bring one's heart closer to our Lord.
