Advent marks the beginning of a new Liturgical year for the Roman Catholic Church. Advent is the Church’s New Year celebration! Contrary to popular belief, Advent is not a part of the Christmas season. Like Lent, Advent was originally celebrated over a span of 40 days and has been shortened to the 4-week period leading up to Christmas. Advent is a time to keep watch in preparation for the coming of the Lord, and a time to leave our sinful ways behind us.
