Uncommon Faith is an absorbing story about Saint Josemaria Escriva, whose teachings about the universal call to holiness anticipated Vatican II's theology of the laity by more than thirty years. The book gives an insider's account of the early years of Opus Dei, an institution founded by Escriva in 1928 to spread his message about lay holiness. Coverdale tells the intriguing story of how Opus Dei overcame overwhelming obstacles to become a vital and important part of the contemporary church. The picture of Escriva that emerges shows why John Paul II decided to canonize Opus Dei's founder in record time.

The book brings together in a single coherent narrative much information that was previously available only to those willing to track down a large number of Spanish sources, many of which are difficult to find.

The author, who holds a PhD in history and who has published three books about various aspects of Spain's history, put the events in the life of Opus Dei in their broader religious, social, political and economic context. He devotes entire chapters not only to the Civil War but also to the events that led up to it and followed it. Eight maps, drawn specially for this book, help the reader situate the events in their geographic setting. Sixteen pages of photographs, most of which were previously unpublished, complement the narrative.
