| Encyclical of August 6, 1993 by Pope John Paul II.
No one can escape from the fundamental questions: What must I do? How do I distinguish good from evil? The answer is only possible thanks to the splendor of the truth whcih shines forth deep within the human spirit, as the Psalmist bears witness: "There are many who say 'O that we might see some good! Let the light of your face shine on us, O Lord,'" (Ps 4:6)
In today's world it seems necessary to reflect on the whole of the Church's moral teaching, with the precise goal of recalling certain fundamental truths of Catholic doctrine which, in the present circumstances, risk being distorted or denied. This encyclical considers the very foundations of moral theology, foundations which are being undermined by certain present-day tendencies.
Topics include: Christ and the answer to the Question about Morality, Freedom and Law, Conscience and Truth, Fundamental Choice and Specific Kinds of Behavior, and Moral Good for the Life of the Church and of the World. |
