| A publication of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology in Steubenville, Ohio, "Letter & Spirit" is a new journal of Catholic biblical theology which seeks to foster a deeper conversation about the Bible. In light of the advancements of the last century in recapturing the historical and literary context of Scripture, "Letter & Spirit" embraces the challenge of the next century--linking the scientific study of Scripture to its liturgical sense in the Church's living tradition.
Contributing Authors
Robert Louis Wilken is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of the History of Christianity at the University of Virginia. Wilken is the author of 10 books.
James Swetnam, S.J., entered the Missouri Province of the Society of Jesus in 1945 and was ordained a priest in 1958. He holds degrees in classical languages, philosophy, theology, and Scripture. Since 1962 he has been a scholar of the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, where he has held numerous posts. His area of specialization is the Epistle to the Hebrews.
Brant Pitre is assistant professor of pastoral theology at Loyola University in New Orleans. His major areas of interest are biblical studies (both Old and New Testaments) and systematic theology (with an emphasis on Roman Catholic theology).
Sofia Cavalletti is a scholar of Hebrew and Semitic languages and biblical exegesis with a special interest in the religious development of children.
Jeremy Driscoll, O.S.B., has been a Benedictine monk since 1973. Ordained to the priesthood in 1981, he teaches theology at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon since. In 2004, he was named a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology and also a member of the Vox Clara Committee of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
Scott W. Hahn, founder of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, holds the Chair of Biblical Theology and Liturgical Proclamation at Saint Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pennsylvania and is Professor of Scripture and Theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. Hahn is the general editor of the Ignatius Study Bible and is author or editor of more than 20 books.
Christopher Baglow holds the Sue Ellen M. Canizaro Chair in Catholic Theology at Our Lady of Holy Cross College in New Orleans.
Marcellino D’Ambrosio is the founder of an apostolate of Catholic renewal and evangelization. He is the author of numerous books and video and audio courses.
Hugh of St. Victor (d. 1141) was philosopher, theologian and mystical writer. A monk and abbot, he wrote on topics ranging from grammar and geometry to history and mystical philosophy. An influential biblical exegete, he wrote numerous commentaries characterized by a concern to draw spiritual and theological meanings from the foundation of a literal and historical meaning of the texts.
F.X. Durrwell, C.Ss.R. (b. 1912) is a French Redemptorist priest is the author of several groundbreaking books of biblical theology.
Augustin Bea, S.J. (1881-1968) was a Jesuit priest with a long distinguished career as a biblical scholar, serving at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the Gregorian University among other places. Cardinal Bea served on the Pontifical Biblical Commission under Pius XII and influenced the formulation of the pope’s encyclical Divino afflante Spiritu (1943). He also collaborated from 1941-48 in the project to prepare a new Latin translation of the Psalms. A close adviser to Pope John XXIII, he had a shaping influence on the Second Vatican Council’s documents on non-Christian religions, religious freedom, and divine revelation.
