Follow in the footsteps of Saint Augustine

Augustine of Hippo (354–430), son of a pagan father and Christian mother, studied rhetoric and philosophy as a young man, renounced his Christian upbringing and lived for fifteen years with his mistress, by whom he had a child. While living in Milan he came under the influence of Saint Ambrose and was baptized in 387. He became a priest in 391, a bishop four years later and produced an extraordinary body of writings — including the Confessions and the City of God — generally considered foundational in the history of Christian thought. Best known for his brilliant intellect, Augustine was also blessed with mystical insight into the Christian mysteries.

Encounter Christ, the Eternal Word

Saint Augustine shows us Christ but always in ways that are new, fresh and unexpected. “If you see love, you see the Trinity,” he tells us, and “Christ was born so we may be born anew.” Augustine weaves a rich tapestry of Christian thought, incorporating the Church, the sacraments, the Blessed Mother and above all the Trinity but never loses sight of “Love, the Fullness and the End” — divine Love manifested in Jesus Christ, the Eternal Word made flesh for our salvation.
