Oberammergau is a town in southern Germany that is famous for its woodcarving. Many travelers also visit Oberammergau to see the renowned Passion Play. In the 1600s the plague was sweeping across Europe. The townspeople made a vow to God that they would perform the Passion Play every 10 years if God spared them from the plague. The first production was in 1634.
