Fifteen centuries ago, a monk on a desert island wrote a letter about his life as a hermit. The manuscript, which speaks of the spirituality of the desert, spread quickly from Gaul throughout the Roman Empire. Today, the island (Saint- Honorat) located on the French Riviera, is still home to Cistercian monks.
