"Ignorance of scripture," said Saint Jerome, "is ignorance of Christ. " And to be ignorant of history is to be ignorant of truth, and to endanger one's identity in Christ and His creation. The history of mankind is full of both good and evil, hope and despair; but over all, it always shows forth the providence of our mysterious yet loving God. It is especially crucial to be deeply familiar and knowledgeable of the history of the Church, so that you can not only articulate these truths to others, but also deepen the conviction and love in your own heart. And remember the famous words of Blessed Cardinal Henry Newman, who converted to the Catholic Church after striving to prove it false: "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant."
