The Missionaries of the Poor

The Catholic Company has joined in partnership with The Missionaries of the Poor to provide support and resources for their missionary work with the poor. The Catholic Company is also supplying educational resources to the Brothers in formation for this religious order. Help support the needs of the Missionaries of the Poor.

The Missionaries of the Poor

In 1981, Father Richard Ho Lung founded a monastic order called “The Missionaries of the Poor”. In the beginning there were only two brothers, but now the order has grown to over 500. The brothers take vows of poverty, chastity, obedience, and promise to give free service to the poor. They currently serve the poor from their home in Kingston, Jamaica as well as in India, the Philippines, Haiti, Uganda & Kenya. Their mission is to “spread the Good News of Jesus Christ primarily by performing the corporal works of mercy of Jesus and secondarily through liturgy, preaching, music, teaching and sacraments.”  Each brother has no personal property or bank accounts. Everything is done in community including eating, sleeping, and traveling. All of their daily activities revolve around prayer and worship. More than just giving aid with food, clothing and shelter, the Missionaries of the Poor are dedicated to building up the Church and teaching the Faith.

"I am glad that so many of the faithful are helping and supporting our need to evangelize the poor."
- Father Richard Ho Lung

Listen to an interview with an associate of Missionaries of the Poor in Charlotte, NC, Peter Tonon.

Granted Vatican approval in 1998, the Missionaries of the Poor work to feed the hungry, house the homeless, counsel prisoners, care for street children, minister to the sick, preach the Good News, and evangelize through music and song. Through all their works, the Missionaries stress the importance of building strong communities. You may be familiar with Father Ho Lung’s ministry if the traveling group “Father Ho Lung and Friends” has visited your parish. You may have also seen them on EWTN. These talented Jamaican singers and dancers evangelize across the globe as they perform original music composed by Father Ho Lung.

"Thank you for the books and the Bibles... We have begun teaching the Catechism to our brothers, who in turn will teach our poor. I will also send copies to our communities in Africa, the Philippines, India and Haiti. I am glad that so many of the faithful are helping and supporting our need to evangelize the poor."
