Earthquake Relief in Haiti - The Missionaries of the Poor
It's been a little over a week since the devastating earthquake hit Haiti. Just yesterday another strong aftershock, registering 5.9, shook the city of Port au Prince again. Assistance is still needed, now more than ever. Our prayers go out to everyone who has been effected by this tragedy, including our friends with the Missionary of the Poor who are stationed in Haiti.
Missionaries of the Poor have served the people of Haiti since 1994 from their mission in Cap-Haitien, located 80 miles north of Port au Prince. Their distance from the capital city kept them safe from the devastation of the earthquake. This has allowed them to become a place of refuge for the people fleeing
Port au Prince. Father Ho Lung says,
| "Many people have lost hope in Haiti and are turning to the second big capital city Cap-Haitien where our brothers are for refugee. Our brothers have taken them in. Our Community Chapel is now a refugee center and the Asile Communal Center for homeless and destitute adults as well as our Bethlehem Center for disabled children have been expanded to take in temporary refugees. Brother Henry is receiving people from the Hospitals, and from trucks and buses coming from Port au Prince to the Missionaries of the Poor to receive shelter. Jesuit priests from the Dominican Republic and others are now helping the brothers in this refugee work." |
As a result of the crisis the Missionaries of the Poor are in great need of basic food items like rice, corn meal, flour, sugar, beans and clean water. Other supplies such as bed linens, clothes, towels, and toiletries are also needed.
