A SHORT HISTORY OF
THE WAY OF THE CROSS
While the Stations of the Cross are a popular devotion to pray year round, the devotion often gets special attention during the season of Lent. Called by many names, such as The Way of the Cross,
Via Crucis, or Via
Dolorosa, the Stations of the Cross allow Christians to follow in the footsteps of Christ during His Passion on Good Friday. Even if we cannot physically go to the Holy Land, we can journey there spiritually when we meditate on Christ's path to Calvary.
This tradition of retracing Christ's steps during the Passion has been attributed to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was said to have visited the spots in Jerusalem where Jesus suffered. She may also have created the original Stations while living with St. John in Ephesus. The practice has been continued by Christian pilgrims since the 300's.
