Archbishop Fulton Sheen: Interesting Facts
Did you know that Fulton Sheen's full name is Peter John Sheen? Born on May 8, 1895, the little boy was called Fulton, a tribute to his mother's maiden name. After his baptism, he was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary by his mother, in the hopes that he would grow up to be a priest.
The Sheen family lived near Peoria, Illinois. They encouraged their children to excel at school and in their spiritual lives. Fulton was an excellent student. He was valedictorian of his class when he graduated high school in 1913. He earned a doctorate in philosophy and then pursued further study at Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. There, he won the prestigious Cardinal Mercier award for the best philosophical treatise. His in-depth knowledge of philosophy, theology, and the Scriptures was evident throughout his writing and recordings.
Fulton Sheen was ordained on September 20, 1919. He began his work as a priest by promising to do one hour of Eucharistic Adoration (a Holy Hour) every day. He kept his promise, even to the day he died. He passed away before the Blessed Sacrament in his private chapel in New York City.
Fulton Sheen became a household name after the airing of his television program, especially when he was featured on the cover of the April 14, 1952 issue of Time Magazine.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen: Cause for Canonization
The Diocese of Peoria officially opened Archbishop Fulton Sheen's Cause for Canonization in 2002. On September 14th the Congregation for the Causes of Saints gave him the title "Servant of God". This process was greatly aided by the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation. In 2006, documentation of two miracles occurring under the intercession of Archbishop Sheen, was sent to Rome for authentication. The Diocese of Peoria completed their investigation of his life and words in 2009 and sent more documentation to Rome. After further study the cause will be sent to Pope Benedict XVI. There is still a long way to go before we can call Archbishop Sheen a saint ...however he still serves as an outstanding role model and source of inspiration to us all.
