August 1 - St. Alphonsus Liguori, bishop and Doctor of the Church. St. Alphonsus was the founder of the religious order known as the Redemptorists. He is the patron of vocations and those suffering from arthritis.
August 4 - St. John Vianney, priest. Also known as "The Cure de Ars", St. John was a parish priest who was widely known for his gifts as a confessor. He is the patron of priests.
August 6 - The Transfiguration of Our Lord. We celebrate the day that Peter, James, and John witnessed the meeting of Jesus, Moses and Elijah on Mt. Tabor. God's voice was heard saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."
August 8 - St. Dominic, priest and founder of the Order of Friars Preachers (the Dominicans). He is known as a miracle worker and for spreading devotion to the rosary. He is patron of scientists and astronomers.
August 9 - St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, religious and martyr. Born to a Jewish family in Germany, she converted to Catholicism in 1922 and became a Carmelite nun in 1934. During the Nazi occupation she and her sister were smuggled to Holland where they ultimately were killed in the gas chambers of Auschwitz in 1942. She is the patron of those who have lost their parents. |
