Eucharistic
Miracles and Eucharistic Phenomena in the Lives
of the Saints
On numerous
occasions in the history of the Church, God has
seen fit to offer miraculous visible proof of
the Catholic teaching that at the sacred words
of Consecration in the Mass, the bread and wine
upon the altar are truly changed into the Body
and Blood of Jesus Christ. Joan Carroll Cruz's
"Eucharistic Miracles" recounts 36
such major Eucharistic miracles in Church
history. She tells of Hosts which have turned to
visible flesh, Hosts which have bled, Hosts
which have become hard as flint when received by
a person in mortal sin, Hosts which have
levitated, Hosts which have manifested their
hidden presence by mysterious lights,
consecrated "wine" which turned into
visible blood, etc., as well as many miracles
which occurred after sacrilege had been
committed against the Holy Eucharist.
Also described
here are many miraculous Eucharistic phenomena
in the lives of the Saints: Mrs. Cruz tells of
Saints who lived on the Eucharist alone, Saints
who had raptures and ecstasies during Holy
Communion, Saints who received Communion
miraculously, and Saints who experienced
levitations, visions, locutions, and phenomena
of tears, fire and light in relation to their
reception of the Eucharist. Plus, another
section of the book gives the history of
Eucharistic devotions, including Benediction,
the Feast of Corpus Christi, and perpetual
adoration. |

Our Lady
of Fatima - Lady of the Rosary
|
|
Our
Lady of Fatima appeared to three shepherd
children, Lucy, Francisco, and Jacinta beginning
on October 13, 1917. The apparitions took place
in Fatima, which is approximately 90 miles north
of Lisbon, Portugal. Mary appeared to the
children 6 times and related a powerful message:
pray the rosary daily, wear the brown scapular,
perform acts of reparation and sacrifice. She
also requested a new devotion - the Five First
Saturdays: "Say
to all those who, for five months, on the first
Saturday, confess, receive Holy Communion,
recite the Rosary and keep Me company for 15
minutes while meditating on the fifteen
mysteries of the Rosary, in a spirit of
reparation, I promise to assist them at the hour
of death with all the graces necessary for the
salvation of their souls." The
children were shown visions of souls suffering
in hell, were told about the coming of World War
II, and were warned of a coming time of
persecution for the church by anti-Christian
forces. On October 13, 1917, a crowd of 70,000
people gathered at the sight of the apparitions
because Mary had promised a great sign would
occur that day. During what has come to be
called "The Miracle of the Sun" the
sun seemed to rotate, grow in size and come
close to the crowd, and seemed to 'dance'.

Our Lady
of Guadalupe - Patroness of the Americas and of the
Unborn
|
|
Our
Lady of Guadalupe appeared to an Indian man
named Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on December 9,
1531. The apparition occurred on Tepeyac Hill
near Mexico City. Our Lady sent Juan Diego to
the Bishop to request a church be built in her
honor on the Hill. The Bishop did not
believe Juan Diego at first, and told him he
needed a sign from Mary before he would agree to
build the church. On December 12th, Mary showed
Juan Diego a rose bush that was in bloom even
though it was winter. She asked him to gather
the roses into his tilma (cloak) and take them
to the bishop. When Juan Diego released his
tilma to show the flowers to the Bishop, a
miraculous image of Mary was imprinted on his
cloak. The Bishop was astounded and agreed to
have Our Lady's church built. The image has
encouraged the conversion of thousands of people
and can still be seen in the Cathedral in Mexico
City.

Our Lady
of Lourdes - The Immaculate Conception
|
|
Our
Lady of Lourdes appeared to a 14-year old girl
named Bernadette Soubirous on February 11, 1858.
Bernadette had been out collecting firewood with
her sister Marie when she came close to the
Massabielle grotto. Bernadette soon saw Our Lady
appear above the rosebush at the mouth of the
grotto. Mary had a rosary on her right arm and
instructed Bernadette to "Pray to God for
sinners" and to do penance. Our Lady
appeared to Bernadette a total of 18 times over
a period of six months. During the last visit,
on March 25, Mary revealed herself to Bernadette
as "The Immaculate Conception". She
also showed Bernadette where to dig to find a
stream that continues to have miraculous healing
powers - even today. Millions of pilgrims travel
to Lourdes each year seeking healing.
Bernadette's visions of Mary were declared
authentic by the Church in 1862. She joined the
Sisters of Notre Dame and died in 1879. She was
declared a saint in 1933 and her body remains
incorrupt in a chapel in the Church of St.
Gildard - Nevers, France.
