Frank Silecchia, a construction worker and volunteer,
discovered a cross made of two steel beams

During the days after 9-11, we all seemed captivated
by the scenes coming out of Ground Zero.
Among the darkness and dust
there were also glimpses of beauty.
One such image was when light streamed through
the delicate, filigree walls - like rays of hope.

The centerpiece on the 9-11 Remembrance Rosary
is inspired by this ethereal image of light
dispelling the surrounding darkness.
It represents the Resurrection,
with a sculpture of Jesus is the heart of the work.
Jesus is rising from the ruins,
the graves of all the victims,
and represents the triumph of life over death,
of love over hatred.
The power of this love was manifested most profoundly
in the self-sacrifice of the heroic rescuers
who rushed to the scene.

The Beads

The prayers of the rosary are arranged
by mysteries which help us to meditate on the life of Jesus.
Each mystery consists of a decade, or 10 beads
on which we pray "The Hail Mary".
There are five decades in each of the
Joyful, Sorrowful, Luminous, and Glorious Mysteries
of the Rosary.
When you are finished, you will have prayed
50 "Hail Mary" prayers.
The number 50 beautifully coincides with
the 50 states of the United States of America.

The beads on the 9-11 Remembrance Rosary
were designed with a special meaning.
Each double-sided bead features
a Miraculous Medal on one side,
and the abbreviation of one of the fifty states one the other.

each state to the Blessed Mother.

The first three beads, also called the antiphon beads,
are engraved with the three letters - USA.
This commemorates Pope Pius IX's
declaration in 1847
of Mary Immaculate as
"Patroness of the United States of America".
