The RSV Bible is a Bible that is a literal translation from original sources (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This means that there is less interpretation of what the concepts mean, and more direct recording of the actual words themselves. The creation of this translation was completed as a partnership between Protestants and Catholics. The RSV is based on the King James Version, but has undergone many revisions over the years. This translation has a more traditional feel to it, and does not have gender inclusive language. These new versions include changes required by the Vatican's 2001 Liturgiam Authenticam, which strives to ensure that scripture used in the liturgy has been translated accurately.

The Douay-Rheims Bible is a Bible that is a literal translation from St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate Bible. St. Jerome created the Latin version of the Bible from original sources (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). This means that there is less interpretation of what the concepts mean, and more direct recording of the actual words themselves. This translation is very traditional, uses "Thee" and "Thou" when referring to God, and does not have gender inclusive language. Reading the Douay-Rheims Bible is a bit like reading Shakespeare. The older words and phrases may be difficult for modern readers to understand, but once you become familiar with it, the language is beautiful. Since the Douay-Rheims Bible is based on the Latin translation, the chapter names and numbering of the psalms are different from any other Catholic or Protestant Bible. This should be taken into consideration if you are looking for a Bible to take to a group study, since it makes comparing verses more challenging.

The NAB is a Bible that is translated from original sources (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic) and was first published in 1970. Due to the use of modern English, the text is more literary. This means that the translation focuses more on conveying the spirit of what the words say, more than their exact literal meaning. The New American Bible has gender inclusive language when describing humans, such as "brothers and sisters" instead of just "brothers". Similar to the RSV Bible, the NAB was created in collaboration with Protestant Biblical scholars, in the hopes that the result would be a translation that could be used by all Christians.
