Theology
of the Body for Beginners
Broken families, abortion,
AIDS, pornography, clergy abuse, homosexual 'marriage' -
our Church and world is in the midst of a profound sexual
crisis. Is there a way
out? For such a time as
this we have been given Pope John Paul II and his
'theology of the body.' Based on the words of Jesus, John
Paul II's reflections on the body and sex take us to the
root of the modern crisis and chart the path to an
authentic sexual liberation. Yet the Pope's profound
scholarship often intimidates the average person.
Here, Christopher West
provides a short and popular summary of the Pope's
revolutionary teaching. Theology
of the Body for Beginners explores the profound
interconnections between sex and the deepest questions of
human existence, including:
- What is the meaning of
life?
- Why did God create us
male and female?
- How do we attain true
happiness on earth?
- What kind of joys await
us in heaven?
- Why is there evil in the
world and how do we overcome it?
- How can we experience
the love we long for in the depth of our hearts?

Introduction
to the Theology of the Body - A Four Part Series
Drawing on Pope John Paul
II’s Theology of the Body, Christopher West shares
God’s original plan for marriage and sexuality.
Christopher provides an understanding of this plan and how
it gives profound meaning to all our lives – married,
single, and consecrated celibates.
As a champion of the
Pope’s revolutionary “theology” of the body, West
points out the profound misunderstanding of what we
understand male and female to mean. The Holy Father
teaches that human life’s dignity and balance depends at
every moment on “who woman will be for man and who man
will be for woman.” God’s plan of life and love is
literally stamped in our bodies, and we reject this plan
at our own peril.
Outline of Talks:
Talk 1: What is the
Theology of the Body & Why Is It So Important?

God's
Plan for a Joy-Filled Marriage
God’s Plan for a
Joy-Filled Marriage is a new, supplemental marriage
preparation program by renowned Catholic author and
teacher Christopher West. Based on Pope John Paul II’s
revolutionary Theology of the Body and the book Good
News About Sex and Marriage. This program has a
two-fold goal: to present a summary of Catholic teaching
on God’s plan for marriage, and to offer engaged couples
practical suggestions for embracing this plan in their own
lives.
The Holy Father teaches
that human life’s dignity and balance depends at every
moment on “who woman will be for man and who man will be
for woman.” God’s plan of life and love is literally
stamped in our bodies. Here, you will find a much-needed
testimony to the essential interrelation between love,
life, and sexuality, and discover how a deep appreciation
for this interrelation is the path to a blessed and
joy-filled marriage.
The God's Plan workbook and
the DVD series are perfect for Marriage Prep classes or
for use as a supplement with an existing Pre-Cana program.

Winning
the Battle for Sexual Purity
In this straight talk with
men, Christopher West addresses the struggles in the area
of sexual purity and lust that many, if not most, men face
on a regular basis.
West explains how the devil
takes what is most sacred and good and makes it profane
through creating a distorted picture and offering it to
the culture. This is why Satan particularly attacks
woman—because in her bearing of new life she reveals the
very mystery of God.
Beginning with a study of
the “two Adams”, West explains why the first Adam
failed to love his bride rightly and turn to God for hope
and healing, while the second Adam (Jesus Christ) loved
his bride (the Church) rightly by giving up his life for
her. West explains how the mission of every man is to lay
down his life for woman, which will bring meaning and
purpose to his life and give woman her due glory.
Through the context of his
own candid story and struggles in this area as a young
man, West closes by offering a practical battle plan for
not only avoiding lust, but actually experiencing a
victory in viewing others purely. He shows how we can
transform the view of woman as an object for selfish
gratification to a deep and lasting view of woman as a
glorious creation of God. |

Woman
- God's Masterpiece
What is the nature of
woman? What is the "feminine genius" that Pope
John Paul II speaks about? Why can woman rightly be called
"God’s masterpiece?"
In this inspirational talk,
Christopher West answers these profound questions and
more. Building on the Pope’s revolutionary Theology of
the Body, West notes that woman’s true greatness lies in
her ability to bring new life into the world.
In this light, the Blessed
Virgin Mary can be seen as the central icon for femininity
because the essence of her being was receptivity – her
"yes" to God is a model for all women to follow.
Christopher West notes that
the vocation of woman is:
To be open and receptive to God's grace so as to give
birth to holiness in the world. To see the 'nuptial
meaning' of the female body - to appreciate that it is
ordered toward the 'one flesh union' of male and female.
To see that woman's true genius is that she embodies the
call to God's life, to conceive and bear forth life unto
the world.
Using the profound insights
of the Holy Father, Christopher West presents us with a
theological framework upon which we can build a deeper
appreciation of the dignity of woman in our world. |

Talk About Sex: A Seminar for College Students
In this no-nonsense talk to
an auditorium full of college students at Villanova
University, Christopher West offers an authentic
definition of “freedom,” explaining how freedom is not
emancipation from the teachings of Christ and his Church,
but rather the ability to see what is good, desire what is
good, and choose what is good – freely. It is this
freedom for living the truth, Christ says, that truly sets
us free.
“It is for freedom that
Christ has set us free!” (Gal 5:1). And this is the
freedom to see what is real and choose what is good.
Christopher also offers a
pointed critique of contemporary culture and what it has
fed us for the past several decades. He explains that what
often passes as love is actually love’s counterfeit –
lust. “Lust leads to deep heartache and broken
relationships,” he explains, “Love leads to the
happiness for which we are all looking.”
Using fascinating stories
and analogies (including a study of the movie The Truman
Show), West explains how the intimate relationship between
man and woman is meant to point us “to the stars, to
eternity.”
Sharing his own personal
struggle as a young adult, Christopher gains the respect
and admiration of the audience as he offers practical
insights on how to live purely amidst a decadent culture. |

Because
We Love Them
Yes, you can (and you must)
talk with your kids about sex! The most difficult subject
for parents is our children's understanding of sexuality -
we want to keep them pure and innocent for as long as we
can. It's hard to know how to talk about sexuality with
them when the time comes. Especially from Christian point
of view. We're often unsure. When is the right time? How
should I begin?
Drawing from years of
experience as both a parent and a counselor for teens,
Sheree Havlik can help. She reminds us that we must raise
our children to share our Christian approach to sexuality
and all that this encompasses. With knowledge, passion,
and a friendly, conversational style, Havlik convinces us
that we can be our children's primary source of
information on sexuality. She helps us see that every
stage of our children's development provides opportunity
for sharing our values: from general understandings of
right and wrong when they are young, to modesty and
respect for others as they grow; from having "the
talk" as they mature, to follow-up conversations with
them as they reach adulthood and leave home. Her humor and
understanding help us relax and find our own answers to
the questions of when, and how. Once you've read this
book, you'll have a surer sense of when and how to talk
about sexuality with your kids. You already know why:
Because you love them. |

A
Case for Chastity - The Way to Real Love and True Freedom
for Catholic Teens
In twenty-six short topical
chapters, teens and young adults share their questions and
real-life experiences about sexual relationships. Their
questions range from "How far is too far?" to
"What's wrong with cohabitation?" Two questions
posed by many people of all ages both within and outside
the Church are also treated: "Chastity sounds nice,
but is it practical?" and "What do the Bible and
celibate men know about sex anyway?"
Teens will find A Case for
Chastity a readable and informative book, and their
parents and teachers, particularly catechists and DREs,
will find it an invaluable resource.

Sex,
Love, and You - Making the Right Decision
The pressure on teens to be
sexually active only increases and multiples as the years
go on. Today, teens are under enormous pressure to be
sexually active. Popular culture tells them that
uncommitted responsible sex is possible. Television,
movies, and the Internet anxious to depict
"reality," find themselves promoting as perverse
of sexual behavior imaginable. More than ever, teens
continue to need a clear understanding of the physical and
psychological fallout of acting out sexual behavior apart
from marriage.
Strongly rooted in Catholic
Tradition, Sex, Love, and You: Making the Right Decision
promotes the value of chastity and tells teens how their
lives will be better if they refrain from sexual intimacy
before marriage. In a direct, no-nonsense fashion, authors
Tom and Judy Lickona examine the dangers of sexual
activity and the rewards of waiting. They explore all sides
of the sex debate--from helping distinguish between myth
and fact, to examining the physical and emotional dangers
of uncommitted sex; from unearthing fallacies and popular
misconceptions about premarital sex, to developing a
personal plan that will allow young people to live a
chaste life. |
