The First Communion season is upon us, and every year we try to give our customers some helpful tips on what kind of gifts to get for their handsome sons (or grandsons, or godsons, or nephews) on the day they receive their First Holy Communion.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion is the pinnacle of our sacramental life where children receive for the very first time the body, blood, soul, and divinity of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is the most precious encounter with Christ imaginable!

So, needless to say, this is a very special day, and it should be turned into a special occasion for the whole family to celebrate together.

To make the day a memorable one, it’s common to have family and friends celebrate after Mass, giving gifts and keepsakes to the First Communicant.  Many times Godparents receive a special token of the day too.

If you’re unsure about what kinds of gifts are appropriate to celebrate such a meaningful Sacrament, here’s a list of Catholic gift ideas to help make First Communion shopping for him a bit easier:

First Communion Crosses

Crosses and crucifixes are always a good choice because they come in a variety of styles and sizes–from traditional ones to special ones made just for this Sacrament–and many can also be personalized with a name and First Communion date.

First Communion Bibles and Books

Every boy needs his own children’s Bible, and a special First Communion Bible is a great choice because they become a special keepsake that can pass down to his own kids and grandkids one day.  Many of our children’s  Bibles can also be engraved for a special touch. There are also many excellent Catholic children’s books that make great gift choices, such as a children’s Missal, as well as other books that teach kids about the Mass, the Sacraments, and the Catholic faith.

First Communion Photo Frames

You definitely want to display the prize photograph of your First Communicant on the big day, and a specially designed First Communion picture frame is a perfect choice.  The bonus of First Communion frames is that they also make ideal gifts for parents as well as grandparents and godparents. Don’t forget to include these important spiritual leaders in a young man’s life.

First Communion Jewelry

First Communion jewelry isn’t just for girls.  Many boys love to wear First Communion lapel pins on their suits, but there are other jewelry choices for boys too.  Some boys may  also like to receive a crucifix necklace or a First Holy Communion medal.  Many pieces can be personalized too.

Miscellaneous Gifts

There are many other great gift choices for little boys on their First Communion day.  These range from faith-based stuffed animals, to rosaries, to saint statues (boys usually love St. Michael the Archangel).  Miscellaneous gifts are a good bet if you’re think that your First Communicant will already receive the above gifts from others.

My son is receiving this sacrament in two weeks time. Looking at these ideas for gifts just makes me wonder, what s it about? While they reflect the essence of traditional piety, they do little to connect with a World, fractured by injustice and resultant premature death. Catholicism has alot to celebrate and alot to proffer to our broken world but regretfully we continously and consistently sell ourselves short……….why not gift our kids with an amnesty interntional membership card etc etc etc

Hi Adam, thank you for your comment, your sentiment is a thoughtful one. First Holy Communion is a Sacrament of Initiation in the Catholic Church and one that is centered in Jesus Christ, being the reception for the first time of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. Because of the profound significance of this Sacrament, it is traditional to give children gifts that serve to strengthen and deepen their faith in the One they have just received, such as a Bible, rosary, crucifix, Catholic medal, etc. These are all signs of the Christian faith they are receiving and are most appropriate for commemorating the Sacrament, and these become keepsakes and reminders for the future. That isn’t to say that one can’t encourage a child to be active in humanitarian organizations to be a witness for Christ in the world, but as these children are in elementary school, it might be better to encourage that later when they are receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation in their teenage years.
