Details

After a week of hearing ghostly noises, a man is visited in his home by the spirit of his mother, dead for three decades. She reproaches him for his dissolute life and begs him to have Masses said in her name. Then she lays her hand on his sleeve, leaving an indelible burn mark, and departs . . .

A Lutheran minister, no believer in Purgatory, is the puzzled recipient of repeated visitations from "demons" who come to him seeking prayer, consolation, and refuge in his little German church. But pity for the poor spirits overcomes the man's skepticism, and he marvels at what kind of departed souls could belong to Christ and yet suffer still . . .

Hungry Souls: Supernatural Visits, Messages, and Warnings from Purgatory recounts these stories and many other trustworthy, Church-verified accounts of earthly visitations from the dead in Purgatory. Accompanying these accounts are images from the "Museum of Purgatory" in Rome, which contains relics of encounters with the Holy Souls, including numerous evidences of hand prints burned into clothing and books; burn marks that cannot be explained by natural means or duplicated by artificial ones. More than just a collection of "Catholic ghost stories,"  Hungry Souls also discerns from these accounts important truths about the afterlife, about God's mercy, and ultimately, about the urgent necessity to pray and perform sacrifices for our brothers and sisters in purgatory, and to reform our lives so as to shorten our own stay in that place of real and awful suffering.

About the Author: Gerard J.M. van den Aardweg, Ph.D., is a Dutch psychotherapist in private practice. In addition to his work in parapsychology-- writing and speaking about near-death experiences and paranormal events such as those detailed in Hungry Souls-- Dr. van den Aardweg has written extensively on pro-life and pro-family subjects. He current resides in the Netherlands with his wife, with whom he has seven children and seventeen grandchildren.

Hungry Souls - A Must Read

By:
Review: This book gives insight and proof of Purgatory and Hell which so many people no longer seem to believe in. Churches now just teach that God is merciful and loving, which he is, but he also warns us to do as he does because there are consequences to your actions. This is an easy read and is not a "thesis paper", it is a truly well written book.

Surprising subject

By:
Review: I was surprised to find this book through the Catholic Company; I guess I found the subject of communication from the dead a taboo exercise in Catholicism. Any Christian is going to ponder the soul's existence after bodily death and this book gives a glimpse of what it takes to get into Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.

my review

Review: When I first read the book I must have been distracted. I was able to read the book Hungry Souls without any distraction and found the book to be very insightful and helpful in learning about purgatory, hell and their suffering. I pray for them always and this book just reinforced why I pray. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Review: This book did not hold my interest and I am very interested in helping poor souls. I've gotten more information off of Catholic websites for free.

Thank you for offering this book

Review: Talked about in school, but now later in life it carries greater depth and the desire to know even more. It's also good that I'm now thinking about & praying for departed souls every day.

Review: Excellent book. I have learned so much more about Purgatory now. It's really a shame that it is not taught or talked about much anymore. An informative read for those who want to learn about Purgatory.

Review: I was very impressed with this purchase. In fact, I only read a chapter before I went online and purchased it in Kindle ebook format to download on my Android tablet. I have diminishing vision due to the diabetes and being able to adjust the lighting, type size, etc., becomes very important as the disease progresses. And holding a book to read using a magnifier glass becomes somewhat tedious, so it was good to have another way to read this book. I did purchase another copy for a Christmas gift.

Review: Thought provoking and inspirational. Lent itself to view eternity with hope and courage. Gave fear of death a new way to be overcome.

Great book

Review: I really enjoyed reading this book. It is well researched and brought back to me the teachings about purgatory that have been recently lost. Very inspiring and worth the time and money to expand your knowledge and understanding of the here-after.

Easy read.

Review: To be honest I never gave Purgatory that much thought until I read this book. I have not stopped praying for the souls since.

Review: I've only read the first several pages, but Hungry Souls seems to be a very interesting study of the concept of Purgatory and its place in Catholic belief. Looking forward to further exploring this book!

Review: This was a fabulous read. We always pray for the poor souls and have been told of their sufferings, but this book REALLY made me rethink and redo my praying for them. I highly recommend this book.

Review: Very good. It shows us how hungry the Holy Souls are and that they need our prayers. They can not pray for themselves. So I have increased my prayers for them. I am interested in those leaving handprints on the altar cloth. Thank you for the book.

Review: This book is an affirmation for me. Baptized Catholic and raised Mormon by an atheist mother and step-father...It took me a long time to find my way back home. I woke up one morning and my soul was hungry for scripture. The hunger only gets stronger. Having experienced my own encounters with the supernatural at different times in my life. This book is spot on. Darn straight Hell and Purgatory are for real! It's not all rainbows and roses if you're not holding yourself accountable!

Review: I grew up with Purgatory as part of the Catholic conversation and teaching. This topic is hardly ever mentioned now days with everyone thinking if they repent in time they'll go to heaven. This book tells us of God's love and mercy and reminds of His Justice. Please read and pass it along. We must remember to pray for the souls in Purgatory!

Hungry Souls

Review: This remind me the life after dead! I know that before God we're sinners! He doesn't want to punish us, but justice demands. So, if we forgive those who sin against us and repay what we owe the others while we live on Earth. We live in modern time. It's very difficult to resist temptations. Just pray and hope daily. I'm a lowly and fragile servant on Earth who rely on God's Mercy.

Fascinating read

By:
Review: I enjoyed this book enough to purchase copies for friends & family. It is a bit "spooky" (disturbing, I am not sure is the correct word) so I would not recommend it for someone who has recently lost a loved one however, I would recommend it for everyone to read at least once to open your eyes.

Everyone needs to read

By:
Review: Hungry Souls is a book that every one needs to read as a young person to see what the effects of sins cause in our lives according to this book.

Review: Excellent -- informative -- interesting -- motivating! As a convert to the Catholic faith, this easy-to-read book has helped me to understand the need to pray for the souls in purgatory and has made me realize my own accountability. A must-read for lifelong and "new" Catholics as well as anyone interested in what happens after death.

Hungry Souls

By:
Review: This book blew my mind.As a lifelong Catholic, I wish I was informed about purgatory a long time ago. A must read for all Christians.

Something to think about

By:
Review: Aside from All Souls Day, Purgatory isn't something I gave much thought to especially since our attention in church about the afterlife seems more focused on getting into Heaven then in passing through - or in having a prolonged stay - in Purgatory. Here is a thought-provoking book on Purgatory that explores a rarely explored place & how we can do something in our lives now to avert a lengthy stay there later. A fascinating read & a must for Sunday School teachers.

Hungry Souls

By:
Review: A book that truly makes one think. It is natural to just assume a loved one went directly to Heaven when they passed away. After reading this book, that is probably seldom the case. I am now more conscious of the need to pray more for my loved ones. A real eye opener. Gave it to a friend to read. She was impressed as well.

Hungry Souls

By:
Review: Excellent book! Eye opening! Everyone should read this - I think it would change their lives, and increase praying for the deceased.

Enlightening knowledge of the Holy Souls

By:
Review: After reading this outstanding book, I will always pray for the Holy Souls. To lighten their pain and suffering, bringing them hope in their despair of losing the sight of God. May God have Mercy on them.

Looking through window of Purgatory

By:
Review: Although I have not finished this book yet, what I have read is quenching some of the long time thirst of wonders about Purgatory. God has allowed us to peek through the window of Purgatory with this book and other revelations of this place that most of us are going to have to transition to after our first death.

wonderful and enlightening book

By:
Review: Very enlightening and informative. You will never think of purgatory and the poor souls there the same way. I will be sharing this book with everyone I care about.

Expedient Delivery

By:
Review: First time ordering. Received product much sooner than stated. This book is excellent for anyone wanting to understand Purgatory. Easy read, interesting stories of visits from those who passed.

Hungry Souls

By:
Review: This book really allowed me to understands that 'ghosts' are real, and why they were, sometimes, showing up!

Lest we forget....

By:
Review: For those of us, (most), who have become lukewarm or perhaps those who are not clear on the Churches teachings, here is clarity; the disturbing truth of what will await many of us who die in a state of grace, (no mortal sin not confessed), and those condemned to Hell for eternity. This book WILL keep many people from the fires of Hell. However, as the reader will find confirmation, all that we do on Earth will suffer an accounting: good and evil deeds. Yet, God in His most unending mercy, gives us all so many ways to lessen our after life sufferings..if only we would respond to him and be always open to his many graces and mercies. This book must be read by anyone seeking to, truly, convert their lives and live the Holy, full life we were intended by our Creator.

Life-Changing!

By:
Review: A real eye-opener. Before I read this book, I prayed for the Holy Souls, but after I read it - I can now say I'm much more devoted to prayer for them. This book offered me a deeper awareness of how greatly we NEED to pray for each other. Truly, I percieve this life and the next differently now. Like another reviewer said, it reads sort of like a thesis paper - it doesn't flow very well - but if you can work through it, you'll learn a great deal and your heart and mind will be changed. Holds true to Catholic teaching. A MUST READ for all Catholics!!! Cons: Little difficult to read; Pros: Accurate, Eye-Opening, Informative

Complete Satisfaction!

By:
Review: The book I ordered arrived very promptly and was one of the best reads I've ever enjoyed. It was difficult to put it down. HUNGRY SOULS will affect your spiritual life in a very positive way.

A must read for all Catholics

By:
Review: Easy and fast to read, great photos to illustrate the experiences. I'd recommend this to both Catholics and protestants, especially those who fear all things Catholic. Clarifies the difference between several types of phenomena and how to know if an apparition is evil, or worthy/in need of your prayers.

DISTURBING BUT INTERESTING READ

By:
Review: A new perspective on purgatory I have never read, but not for the faint at heart. May be disturbing to some young readers. Cons: Not for the timid; Pros: Easy To Read, New perspective, Short story

I would buy this product again and again

very good/hard reading

By:
Review: could open some eyes about life in general. and most important as a reminder to pray for our departed.

Hungry Souls

By:
Review: Great understanding and motivation to pray for the souls in Purgatory. Will certainly not feel like most at Funerals "well, she/he's in Heaven now". Also gives one thought about our own life on earth. How will we fare? Scary but truly eye opening.

An eye opener!

By:
Review: I bought this book to share with my husband who has always had a devotion to the poor souls in Purgatory with no one to pray for them. He is also visited by souls in need of attention. It combines what the Church teaches about Purgatory with scientific evidence. I have now renewed my efforts to pray for the deceased and to have mass offered on their birthdays.

In Need of Prayers for Poor Souls

A View into the World

By:
Review: I already have recommended this to my cousin who has purchased the book and has a reaction similar to mine: A startling book, well documented, which commands the imagination and reason to a world not easily understood. It did for me what the apparition of Hell did for St. Lucia, shaking one's preconceptions of a "holy life well lived."

Beautiful and chilling

By:
Review: A great source for verifiable information on one of the great mysteries of the Roman Catholic faith. Much more technical than I would have thought which was a nice surprise. A must read for those wanting to grow their understanding of the faith and how we can better serve not only the poor souls but Our Father as well. Truly inspirational and a multiple read must!

Very thought provoking - I learned a lot

By:
Review: The book gives you another side and makes you think about a subject you have not heard much about

Excellent Book

By:
Review: Great information on a challenging topic

Very informative

By:
Review: I was a bit afraid the book would be "ghost story"-like, but instead found information and clarity on Purgatory. The only negative was that it was written a bit like a thesis paper from college- I was constantly moving back and forth between the chapters Best Uses: Self education; Pros: Informative not preachy

Kept Secret Too Long

By:
Review: Amazing read on a subject often left un-discussed in Mass. This book is a stern reminder of God's justice and the need for penance instead of just giving God "lip service". We are called to, "Be perfect as our Heavenly Father if perfect" and a debt is laid to our account to be paid here or hereafter. This book will dramatically remind you of the need to pray for our faithfully deceased.
