Product Description

After a week of hearing ghostly noises, a man is visited in his home by the spirit of his mother, dead for three decades. She reproaches him for his dissolute life and begs him to have Masses said in her name. Then she lays her hand on his sleeve, leaving an indelible burn mark, and departs...

A Lutheran minister, no believer in Purgatory, is the puzzled recipient of repeated visitations from "demons" who come to him seeking prayer, consolation, and refuge in his little German church. But pity for the poor spirits overcomes the man's skepticism, and he marvels at what kind of departed souls could belong to Christ and yet suffer still...

Hungry Souls recounts these stories and many other trustworthy, Church-verified accounts of earthly visitations from the dead in Purgatory. Accompanying these accounts are images from the "Museum of Purgatory" in Rome, which contains relics of encounters with the Holy Souls, including numerous evidences of hand prints burned into clothing and books; burn marks that cannot be explained by natural means or duplicated by artificial ones.

About the Author: Gerard J.M. van den Aardweg, Ph.D., is a Dutch psychotherapist in private practice. In addition to his work in parapsychology-- writing and speaking about near-death experiences and paranormal events such as those detailed in Hungry Souls-- Dr. van den Aardweg has written extensively on pro-life and pro-family subjects. He current resides in the Netherlands with his wife, with whom he has seven children and seventeen grandchildren.

An eye opener! 5.00 out of 5

By: One woman with a voice (Northern VA, December 1, 2010) Verified Buyer
Pros: Renews my effort to pray;
Best Uses: My chosen November readin;
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I bought this book to share with my husband who has always had a devotion to the poor souls in Purgatory with no one to pray for them. He is also visited by souls in need of attention. It combines what the Church teaches about Purgatory with scientific evidence. I have now renewed my efforts to pray for the deceased and to have mass offered on their birthdays.

It is a good book and a good reminder to all about purgatory. I would have liked to see more hard evidence in proving the point though.

A new perspective on purgatory I have never read, but not for the faint at heart. May be disturbing to some young readers.

By: Tante Jo (Cape Cod, MA, November 20, 2010) Verified Buyer
Pros: Documented; Startling;
Cons: none;
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I already have recommended this to my cousin who has purchased the book and has a reaction similar to mine: A startling book, well documented, which commands the imagination and reason to a world not easily understood. It did for me what the apparition of Hell did for St. Lucia, shaking one's preconceptions of a "holy life well lived."

Makes a strong case for all to remember the poor souls in our prayers and sacrifices. Excellent documentation of visits by souls after death or near-death experiences.

By: Catholic Mom in VA (Southern VA, March 14, 2010) Verified Buyer
Pros: Informative not preachy;
Best Uses: Self education;
Bottom Line: Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I was a bit afraid the book would be "ghost story"-like, but instead found information and clarity on Purgatory. The only negative was that it was written a bit like a thesis paper from college- I was constantly moving back and forth between the chapters
