First, to clarify a common misunderstanding: the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is not the same thing as the Virgin birth. The Immaculate Conception is a doctrine piously believed from the earliest centuries of the church. That is, it was always believed, and infallibly held, that Mary never committed a sin. Pope Pius IX infallibly declared that Mary’s sinlessness began at the first moment of her conception. Though born of the normal action of her father and mother (St. Anne and St. Joachim), Mary did not, however, inherit original sin, but was exempted from it, by a unique grace of God, from the first moment of her conception, so that the Son of God would be born of a woman who was never – even for an instant – under the dominion of the devil. Our Lady’s feast day, under this title, is a holy day of obligation and is celebrated on December 8. She is the patroness of the United States. © 2006.
