Product Description

John Henry Newman (1801–1890), beatified September 19th in Birmingham, England, by Pope Benedict XVI, was a brilliant Oxford professor, a highly influential Anglican pastor and writer, a controversial convert to Catholicism (in 1845), and, finally, a priest and cardinal of the Church. Newman’s published books include Via Media, Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, Apologia Pro Vita Sua, and the Grammar of Assent. Blessed John Henry Newman spoke with great truth and honesty, his wisdom clear to all who heard him speak, despite his lack of physical presence and eloquence. Newman was declared venerable in 1991.

As Catholics, we may be fascinated by the story of the miracle attributed to Newman’s intercession or we may be drawn to learn what he will be declared patron of, but, in a sense, this is the “packaging” that catches our eye. The real treasure lies inside his life and his example. The true treasure is Christ’s life lived out once again, “hidden” in the features of each of the baptized, and brilliantly reflected in the actions and words of a few, such as Blessed John Henry Newman.

Gain insight about the true meaning of life through Newman’s sermons and writings in Life’s Purpose: Wisdom from John Henry Newman
