In 1830, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Paris to a Visitation nun -- Sister (now Saint) Catherine Laboure -- and showed her a vision of a medal that she wished to have struck. The vision was just as you see it here: with rays (representing graces) flowing down to the earth from her outstretched hands, with an inscription surrounding, saying "O Mary Conceived Without Sin, Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee." On the reverse, the vision specified an "M" surmoutned by a cross, with two hearts (of Jesus and Mary) and 12 stars, recalling the words of St. John in chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation: "a Woman, clothed with the sun, and on her head a crown of 12 stars." © 2006
