This edition of commentaries on all twenty-seven books of the New Testament gives you the complete English (Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition) and Latin (New Vulgate) texts of each book, plus extensive and faithfully Catholic explanations of the scriptural texts and their implications for everyday life. It is self-contained with wide-ranging general introductions, introductions to each biblical book, a table of sources sited, maps and informative notes. Scholarly and readable, the Navarre bibles are a comprehensive intellectual, historical, and spiritual survey of the riches of the New Testament.

This hardback edition is a larger size (apprx. 7 x 10 inches) to accommodate much more extensive commentary than in either the compact edition or the original paperback 12-volume edition. The commentary focuses in more depth and length, on a related topic, as compared with the shorter, more detailed commentary on individual verses or very short sections. It avoids repetition between Scriptural books. There is a unitary vision and explanation for each Scriptural book, more attention to the sense of the text, and the avoidance of repetition in explanations of the synoptic Gospels. The larger trim size and more ample margin allows for easier reading and note taking than in earlier versions.

Reading the bible without the commentaries was difficult, it actually felt like a chore. This bible has excellent explanation; the commentaries written with simple easy to understand English. I am understanding more of the faith than when I first tried to read the bible before my conversion. My next purchase would be the Old Testament.

There is an explaination of the verses that is very helpful along with siteing the document that the Catholic teaching comes from. I am not scholar so a little of it was a little deep for me but most of it was something I could understand. On the whole it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY in understaning the Catholic faith and where it is based in scripture.

I own them all; NAB, NRSV, RSV, NIV, ESV, NKJV, And nothing even comes close to the study notes in this Navarre Bible. Simply put, they are easy to understand and everything possible is fully explained. The only negative thing about the Bible is that the study notes are so thorough that you need a pick up to carry all the NT & OT books to your study class!

Chock full of references, comments and explainations it has provided more than it's share of AH moments; that moment where a puzzling verse was explained in a context that opened a door that was previously closed. Having comments from the Church fathers is especially useful, providing a reference to put things in context where as a non-annotated Bible may leave you wondering about the message.

The commentaries come from such credible resources as the Magisterium of the Church and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I could not recommend it too highly.
