Testament (testamentum in Latin) means covenant. Old Testament refers to God's covenant during Moses' time. Our current use of the word testament refers to the collection of books, or sacred texts, which contain our Christian history -- the doctrine of the "old" and "new" covenants with God. There are many Bible studies that help us to better understand these covenants, many of which delve into one specific book of the Old Testament or the New Testament. Different Bible translations, such as the New American Bible (NAB), are available to assist us in our Bible study.
