Our Second Birth draws from Nouwen’s last journal, Sabbatical Journey, reflects on the meaning of our journeys and relationships, and calls us to awaken to the sacredness of life and the love of God.
In his sabbatical year Nouwen relinquished worldly relevance to seek a quiet communion with God. He left his job at Daybreak where he had lived for nine years, to open up his time to an uncluttered connection with the divine. Our Second Birth recounts the interactions and reflections of Nouwen’s last year of life right up to a month before his unexpected death. Nouwen’s thoughts and perceptions unfold as we learn about the friendships and events that he cared about. We witness the deep striving that inspired Nouwen throughout his life and see where they lead him at this time of maturity and introspection. This intimate work provides a window on the humble yet influential soul that has come to have such a huge impact on Christianity in the 20th century.
