One day two angels – Michael and Gabriel – appeared to the toddler Jesus, holding in their hands the cross and the tools of the crucifixion. The child Jesus ran quickly to his mother to seek consolation. It’s a tender feature of the image that one of Jesus’ sandals is falling off of his foot, suggesting that he almost lost it while he was running in haste to his mother.
