On a recent buying trip to Loreto, Italy, we found these beautiful heart-shaped medals on silver necklaces. This one, featuring the Our Lady of Perpetual Help icon, is an especially lovely pendant. The icon features classic Byzantine style and is very popular among Orthodox and Catholic Christians. The icon features a scene in the life of Mary & Jesus. One day two angels – Michael and Gabriel – appeared to the toddler Jesus, holding in their hands the cross and the tools of the crucifixion. The child Jesus ran quickly to his mother to seek consolation. It’s a tender feature of the icon that one of Jesus’ sandals is falling off of his foot, suggesting that he almost lost it while running in haste to his mother. The back of this Our Lady of Perpetual Help necklace features the ancient Christian symbols of the Chi Rio (XP: The first two letters of "Christ" in Greek) combined with the Alpha and Omega symbols. Together the Madonna and Child and the Christian symbols identify Christ as God and Savior, making this medal an excellent visual witness of the Christian faith.
