Our Lady of Guadalupe is how the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego in Mexico in the 16th century. She left behind a miraculous image on Diego's tilma which is still preserved and venrrated in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most visited Marian shrines of the world. Our Lady of Guadalupe is well loved, and she has become the patroness of the Americas as well as the patronness of the unborn. In this image the Blessed Virgin Mary is wearing a sash around her waist, which was the symbol of pregnancy in the Aztec culture to which she revealed herself. Her eyes are closed and hands folded in prayer.
