In 1251, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, Superior General of the Carmelite Order, and told him, "Whosever dies clothed in this (scapular) shall not suffer eternal fire.” On the back of this medal are the words “Virgen Del Carmen”. The scapular medal may be worn in the place of a cloth scapular (brown scapular), but it is recommended, to enjoy the many spiritual benefits associated with the devotion, that the wearer should be properly invested in the brown scapular first.
