Saint Lucy was one of the early martyrs for the Christian faith, killed during the reign of the Roman emporer Diocletian. St. Lucy is depicted hold a lily, symbolizing purity as a virgin, as well as a dish with two eyes on it. According to tradition St. Lucy had her eyes put after she refused to marry a pagan suitor, choosing instead to give her dowry to the poor and offer her virginity to God. She was betrayed to the Romans who put her to death on account of her faith. Lucy's name means "light" and she is the patron saint of blindness. Saint Lucy is one of seven female saints, other than the Blessed Virgin Mary, mentioned by name in the Canon of the Mass.
