In 1726, Gerard Majella was born in Muro, Italy. Even as a child, he preferred the things of God to all else. Miracles were a daily occurrence in his life: restoring crops in the field; healing those who were sick; even bringing dead persons back to life. His most famous miracle, however, occurred when he forgot one day his handkerchief in a home he was visiting. Years later, the woman of the home married and was delivering her first child. Her labor was extreme, and fearing she was at the point of death, remembered the holy man’s handkerchief, and urgently requested that it be brought and placed on her. Immediately, the pains subsided and the delivery went smoothly. As you can imagine, news of the miracle spread, literally, all over the world, and that is how St. Gerard came to be the patron saint of expectant mothers. His feast day is October 16.
