On a recent buying trip to Loreto, Italy, we found this stunning San Damiano crucifix pendant on a silver necklace. Due to its larger size, this beautiful San Damiano crucifix pendant makes an ideal necklace for a man or a large accent jewelry piece for a woman. The large size also clearly shows much of the detail in the original. Although the artist is unknown, this cross is well-known as the one beneath which St. Francis of Assisi prayed when the Lord commissioned him to rebuild the Church. More of a colorful icon than a crucifix, it artistically features images of people who bring special meaning to the cross itself. The five major witnesses to Christ’s crucifixion: Mother Mary, St. John the Beloved, Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James, and the Centurion. Also shown are minor witnesses -- angels, patron saints, apostles. At the top is an image of the resurrected Jesus surrounded by angels. The original San Damiano cross hangs in the Santa Chiara (St. Claire) Church in Assisi, Italy.
