The San Damiano Crucifix is the famous Byzantine style icon cross before which St. Francis of Assisi prayed when he received his commission from Christ to rebuild His Church. The San Damiano cross was painted in the 12th century and today hangs in the Basilica of St. Clare of Assisi. This particular San Damiano crucifix is unique in that a full color panel replica of the original crucifix is affixed to a larger thick wood backing and surrounded by a decorative etched border. The wood is painted gold which contrasts beautifully with the dominant reds in the icon cross itself, and the thick but light weight wood has the look and feel of an icon. A great choice for those who love traditional icons.
