Product Description
Luca della Robbia (1400-1482), was known first as a sculptor in bronze and marble. He was commissioned in 1421 to design the choir gallery of the cathedral at Florence, Italy. Later, he perfected a process for making clay reliefs by coating them with a glaze compound of tin, antimony, and other materials. Usually, the Madonna and Child, Saints, and Angels appear in white with a blue background, or it is finished in terracotta. Luca della Robbia's three sons carried on his tradition into the 16th century, and today, many Italian artisans continue creating these beautiful reliefs in and around Florence, Italy. This lovely Madonna and Child terracotta della Robbia plaque was made by a family in the hills outside of Lucca, Italy. Measures 5 inches.
