St. Andrew was born in Bethsaida of Galilee and lived with his younger brother, Simon Peter, in Capernaum. Peter and Andrew were partners in the fishing business. Andrew and John were disciples first of John the Baptist, who led them to Jesus. Andrew immediately recognized Jesus as the Messiah, and hastened to inform Peter, his brother. Our Lord first called them both to follow as disciples, and later, invited them to join his elite group of 12. In addition to his group of 12, Jesus clearly had an inner circle – Peter, James and John, but interestingly – and no doubt owing to some dignity or special status that Andrew must have enjoyed – in all of the lists of Apostles given in the Gospels, Andrew, though not one of the closest three, is always the fourth name to appear. Andrew is the one who mentions the boy with the loaves and the fishes, which Jesus multiplied to feed the 5,000, and he was the one whom Phillip approached when the Greeks had a question for Jesus, shortly before his passion and death. Andrew was martyred during the reign of Nero, bound – not nailed, so as to prolong his suffering – to an “X” shaped cross, that has since become known as St. Andrew’s cross. His feast day is November 30, and he is the patron of fishermen, elderly maids, Russia and Scotland.
