St. Josephine Bakhita was born in Sudan in 1869. Bakhita was kidnapped and sold into slavery at a young age. Bakhita recounts that she was never treated poorly by her kidnappers, rather she was treated with love and geniality. later, she was entrusted to the Canossian Sisters of the Institute of Catechumens in Venice, and it was there that she learned about God. She then received the sacraments of initiation and took the new name Josephine. in 1896 Josephine was consecrated to God as a Daughter of Charity where she lived a humble life for the next 50 years.
