The San Damiano crucifix is a Byzantine style painted icon cross that hung in the San Damiano Catholic church near Assisi, Italy, and it is the cross before which St. Francis of Assisi prayed when he received his commission from Christ to rebuild his Church. St. Francis of Assisi then went on to found a new religious order of mendicant friars, the Franciscans. This San Damiano crucifix replica is attached to a larger gold-painted thick wood cross, giving the icon crucifix a wide gold border. The wood cross also features decorative motifs engraved in the wood and then thickly coated with a clear overlay. Imported from Italy and a great size for displaying on a bedroom end table, office shelf, or even on the kitchen counter.
