Product Description

Tom Playfair is the first book of “Fr. Finn’s Famous Three”. Along with sequels Percy Wynn and Harry Dee, Tom Playfair was the most popular of Fr. Francis J. Finn’s twenty-seven Catholic novels for young people.

Resembling a Catholic version of Charles Dickens’ stories, or even the Hardy Boys, the various adventures of Tom Playfair were read by hundreds of thousands of young people in the late 19th and 20th centuries. But young Catholics today love Tom Playfair too! Their quaint turn-of-the-century language is part of the charm of the stories as is Fr. Finn’s own brand of humor. When the kids “get into” his style they find it hilarious!

But besides being good fun, the stories have a moral. Tom Playfair is an unruly little boy when he is first sent to St. Maure’s boarding school, but he develops into a good Catholic young man and a leader—without ever losing his high spirits.

Treat Your Family

According to the American Catholic Who’s Who, Fr. Finn was “universally acknowledged the foremost Catholic writer of fiction for young people.” It was Fr. Finn’s lifelong conviction that “one of the greatest things in the world is to get the right book into the hands of the right boy or girl.” As Tom Playfair himself says, “One good Catholic story will do more good than a dozen volumes snarling against books that boys ought not to read!” Treat your family to the most successful tale for Catholic boys and girls published in the English language!

  • The Author
As an eleven-year-old Francis Finn was a voracious reader, devouring such classics as Cardinal Wiseman’s Fabiola and Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby. After his first communion at age twelve, Francis began to feel the desire to become a Jesuit priest. During his seminary days the prospective priest was assigned as prefect of St. Mary’s boarding school or “college” in St. Mary’s Kansas. There he learned—often the hard way—how to teach and discipline boys. And it was there that the future Fr. Finn wrote the first chapter of Tom Playfair. When he read it aloud to his class they loved it! Of course they wanted more, and so will your children when they hear this remarkable audio book. A “Catholic Dickens”
