Treatise on the Love of God is in every respect a great work. Having shown in his Introduction to the Devout Life how people in all careers and on all levels can truly live Catholic Christian lives, St. Francis de Sales next sought to bring men to a deeper knowledge of the origin and fulfillment of all devotion. This book is embued with the conviction that sactity is possible in everyday life. Because of the book's order, clarity and sound doctrine, and because of its author's vast knowledge and mastery of language, the book is as great in execution as it is in purpose. A learned man in a learned era, St. Francis de Sales was widely read in the Greek and Latin classics. Firmly grounded also in theology and philosophy, he seems to have read everything on the spirutal life by medieval and renaissance writers. Moreover, he everywhere shows his intimate knowledge of Sacred Scripture and was a close student of St. Thomas Aquinas. St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622) is a Doctor of the Church.
