Advent candles are special candles used during the four weeks of the Advent season, and are often placed inside an Advent wreath. On each of the four Sundays of Advent, a candle is lit to symbolize the increasing joy of the coming of Our Lord's birth. Once all four Advent candles are lit, the most light is shed from the Advent wreath as the day of the Messiah's birth has finally arrived. The traditional color of Advent is purple, thus Advent candles in most Christian traditions are also a deep purple. Purple is the symbolic color of penance, just like Lent, and Advent is also known as the "little Lent". One Advent candle is a rosey pink color to commemorate Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent where joy begins to increase as there is only one more week of waiting and penance left. This rose candle is lit on the third Sunday of Advent and is a "light purple" to symbolize this increased joy. Advent candles come with and without the Advent wreath.
