Five 10-Second Prayers for God’s Help

Aug 21, 2018 By Ashley Osmera

I love finding ancient prayers and poems of the Church that are beautiful and deeply moving. The kind that continue for stanza after stanza, even when you think that more beautiful phrases aren’t possible! The words of the saints and other holy men and women throughout the centuries have inspired and strengthened me amidst many a difficult day.

This is especially true when I know that I need Our Lord’s help with something but just can’t find the words to say. This can happen when I’m in physical pain, so stressed that words just swirl around my head, or just absolutely physically, mentally, and spiritually exhausted.

Sometimes a few well-placed phrases are enough to give the devil and my own weak nature a good punch in the gut, and get me back on my feet. These types of prayers are especially wonderful because they don’t take much time, can be prayed without being too distracted from work or caring for kids, and are easy to memorize.

Here are a few of my favorite “SOS” prayers to Our Lord.

5 Prayers For God’s Help That Take 10 Seconds or Less:

#1 - From the Liturgy of the Hours

God come to my assistance,

Lord make haste to help me!

#2 - From the Universal Prayer of Pope Clement XI

Guide me by your wisdom,

Correct me with your justice,

Comfort me with your mercy,

Protect me with your power.

#3 - From the Book of Esther

My Lord, you alone are my King.

Be mindful of me, Lord.

Make yourself known in the time of my distress

And give me courage.

Save me by your power, and help me,

Who am alone and have no one but you, Lord.

#4 - From the Te Deum

Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance.

Govern and uphold them now and always...

Keep us today, Lord, from all sin.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy

Lord, show us your love and mercy

For we put our trust in you.

In you, Lord, is our hope:

And we shall never hope in vain. Amen

#5 - From Saint Cyprian of Carthage

Lord, come soon come to us,

Leading us from darkness to light,

Oppression to freedom,

Misery to joy, conflict to peace.

May you drive away the storms

And tempests of our lives,

And bring gentle calm.

We pray that you will care for us,

As a father cares for his children. Amen.
