8 Ways To Use Holy Water

Aug 12, 2014 By Gretchen Filz

“From long experience I have learned that there is nothing like holy water to put devils to flight and prevent them from coming back again. They also flee from the Cross, but return; so holy water must have great virtue. For my own part, whenever I take it, my soul feels a particular and most notable consolation.”

– St. Teresa of Avila
 Teresa_of_Avila

When we read this quote from St. Teresa of Avila, we should be reminded of the importance of holy water. We Catholics dip our fingers in holy water and make the Sign of the Cross when entering a church in order to recall our baptism and our baptismal promises,

As you know, the baptismal promises included renouncing Satan and disdaining sin. We forget this, however, and take holy water for granted most of the time. If we use it regularly, that's an easy thing to do.

We must remember that holy water, through a priest, is blessed by God in virtue of Christ's baptism. The Catholic Church possesses enormous power in being able to impart sacramental grace—and holy water as a sacramental receives its power through the prayer and authority of the Church.

The rite of blessing said over water by a priest to make it holy contains prayers of exorcism. It can banish demons, heal the sick, and send unwarranted grace upon us—yet most of the time we cross ourselves with this water without even thinking about how holy it really is.

You can read profound prayers of blessing that are prayed over holy water here and find a downloadable PDF here.

The fact of the matter is that holy water is a powerful sacramental and we ought to use it daily. To prevent us from using it without thinking, we should consciously find ways to use it more. Holy water can be used to bless people, places, and things that are used by humans in their goal of glorifying God with their lives.

Here is a list of eight ways to use holy water in your everyday life:

1. Bless yourself. This suggestion is obvious, but if we are only blessing ourselves with holy water on Sunday, then aren’t we missing out on the rest of the week?  You can never have too much grace or blessing in your life.  Use holy water daily.  Keeping a holy water font in the home is a great idea so that you, your family, and guests can be blessed in the comings and goings from your home.  Keep the font right by the front door to ensure you never leave home without it.

2. Bless your house.  If you haven’t taken the time to bless your house with holy water, then no time is better than the present.  Your home is the domestic Church and is in need of spiritual protection.  You can sprinkle holy water in your home yourself, or have a priest formally bless your home using holy water as part of the house blessing ceremony.

3. Bless your family. Use holy water to pray and make the Sign of the Cross over your spouse and children before they go to sleep at night. Bonding the family to each other and to God in this way is a great family tradition to adopt. Keep a holy water bottle by the bedside for this purpose.

4. Bless your work space. If you work outside of the home, sprinkling your work space with holy water is a great idea, not only for spiritual protection on the work front, but also as to sanctify your daily work for the glory of God.

5. Bless your car. The car is probably the most dangerous place where you spend a significant amount of time each day. Never underestimate the power of holy water applied to your vehicle to keep you safe from harm's way, when used in faith and trust in God. In fact, you can also have a priest bless your car with holy water.

6. Bless your vegetable garden. It was a common practice in the Middle Ages for people to sprinkle their vegetable gardens with holy water.  In times when people were very dependent on crops for their livelihood, lack of rain or early frosts could be devastating. Using holy water to bless and sanctify the plants that would be used for the family's sustenance showed their reliance on God's grace.

7. Bless the sick.  If you know of any sick friends or family, then blessing them with holy water probably counts as a corporeal and a spiritual work of mercy.  If you visit the sick in a hospital or nursing home, bless their living space with holy water and leave a holy water bottle with them as a comfort in their time of need.

8. Bless your pets. Many parishes on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi have a rite of blessing for pets. Pets are loved companions for individuals and families and often provide a great service to them, and even these can be blessed with holy water because all creation has the end of giving glory to God. This also applies to livestock and farm animals that provide labor, livelihood, and nourishment to humans.

Here is a simple prayer to say when using holy water:

“By this holy water and by Your Precious Blood, wash away all my sins, O Lord. Amen.”

There is no specific prayer to pray when using holy water, other than making the Sign of the Cross: "In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit." You can also pray an Our Father or even the St. Michael Prayer when using holy water. Keep in mind that holy water has already been blessed by the prayers of the priest.

How do you use holy water?

Holy water is one of those beautiful gifts (and weapons) from God to keep us sanctified and holy in our daily lives and to keep the things we regularly use sanctified and holy. (Some parents even use holy water to bless things their children regularly use such as bicycles and school books.) If we stop and think about what a generous gift holy water is, we will use it more frequently, thoughtfully, and gratefully!

If you have other creative and faithful ways in which you use holy water to sanctify your everyday life, please share with us in the comments below.

The greatest weapons are offering Holy mass for the problem child , the holy rosary praying it everyday and offering it up for your sons and all your intentions (note) read the powerful promises attached to the holy rosary they are awesome , put the miraculous medal on you child make sure all these items are blessed by a priest (note) blessed crucifix ubove his bed , not just a plain cross ! You need a crucifix with the body of Christ , if the crucifix is not blessed it just a piece of decoration to the demons ,however with the blessing on the crucifix,Now there is power !!! What the demons see when they approach a blessed crucifix is Jesus on the cross before them so they flee , the demons are absolutely real and the greatest tool they use is to convince people they are not a real evil spirit , how can you fight something you do not believe or know exist ? it is a unfair battle ,also the green scapular (read how to use it ) also the have Brown scapular blessed and put on child read up on all these items they are great weapons , I had many problems with my children for years until I began to use the weapons ., now truly I tell you my kids and I pray the rosary everyday and it's as if I have different children all Glory be to God !!! It didn't happen over night but I persisted and it all changed in Gods time ,never never lose hope I trust your child to the Virgin Mary and see how she will intersede miracles are still here with faith of a mustered seed . God bless you do NOT loose hope

I very much believe in the power of Holy Water. When we were having some evil people looking at property next to our home, I went over there and sprinkled holy water all around praying so hard. The evil people bought the house, swear at their family, drove through our yard, .... I continued to pray very hard for me to love them. THEN I had an our of body experience!! Jesus took me to a place with accompanied by an angel on each side of me. He showed me WHY those people had to live there. I remember saying, "Of course they have to live there". My whole body loved them. I immediately was back in my body and have loved these people ever since. Even if they will not even wave to us :)

A family member was mentally treated of depression that ended up in bipolarity or borderline personality, bpd. Multiple suicide attempts, hate, hedonism (that is the way that psychologists describe bpd )dominated her old dark days . DURING TWO DECADES she rejected going to church, and threw away any religious things from her home. Finally when almost all was lost in her life she accepted to attend one healing mass, and surprisingly she shivered and vomited when she saw the chalice and right during confession. After one year an a half she still continues attending the healing masses. ..away from the biweekly psychiatrist visits. Now she prays the rosary daily but still needs more healing...more spiritual changes. It is all about to get to know GOD , accept GOD in our lifes, and live according to his will.

GLORY TO THE HOLLY TRINITY.

When cleaning out a dresser drawer I found a jar with water in it (believe but not sure it's holy water).

It has been in their for years but I've forgotten about it. Has a rusty cover so has rust specks floating in it. How would I discard it? Or should I strain it.
Hi Joan, you can discard this water by pouring it into the ground.

we must pray without ceasing with our hearts our lips and our actions as well as holy water. We share Christs passion and cross to obtain the crown. never give up hope! Rachael read up on vaccinations given to babies on You Tube and the side effects. its pretty horrific. You can counterbalance this through diet. cut out dairy stick to whole foods. the hormones found in cows milk has negative side effects. my little ones are much calmer when switched diet. try beans, lentils, homous and pitta, avocado, potato. . all whole foods that havd grown from ground. peanut butter sandwiches! exchange cows milk for coconut or oat/nut milks. you will need 4 weeks commitment to notice difference but your worth it! and youll never go back! big hugs x
I sprinkle a bit in my son’s diffuser at bedtime with calming essential oils. He’s almost 4 and has suffered with restlessness, nightmares, and night terrors his whole life.

There was no Holy Water in our Catholic Church, Easter Sunday morning. we share a priest with neighboring church were the Easter vigil was held. Water at our church was blessed after homily baptismal renewal. Why?
Hello Joanna and Carlos. Praised be Jesus and Mary!

You should be reminded of the story of St. Monica of Hippo and St. Augustine of Hippo. And if you didn't know about the story, you must read it! Her prayer and sacrifice made his unprayerful, drunkard, bad son into a SAINT! A miracle it is, you'll know how can a Mother's (Parent's) prayer and sacrifice give her son a complete, heavenly and scientifically unexplainable CONVERSION. Maybe there's an evil demon in him but, also, maybe it's him who is evil inside. Just Pray and Holy Water is a good idea and great help. God Bless Your Families!

Joanna..... My son is identical to everything you have said about your child. My son is also about to turn 18, and will not stop his drug use, and is very disrespectful. A long time ago I spoke with a priest because I suspected the same as you suspect, but he said not to believe in that kind of stuff. I took him to get mental help, but with no success because of how normal this has become in society. My son was born out of wedlock and this situation is what can come of it. The priest was not much help at all. I think you are doing the right thing with holy water. I just barely thought of it. The problem with society is that you are allowed to say that you believe in god and everything that is said in the Bible, but society does not allow you to "actually" believe in everything written in the bible. God will prevail.... To my knowledge a psychiatrist will probably just give him more drugs, and is most likely to say that you are the crazy one because you are a believer.

What is Holy Salt or exercised salt?
I put Holy Water in a small spray bottle so as to make it last longer, not drip, & covers me when I spray on head. I carry a small spray bottle in my purse. Use: car, if someone may need baptising, or to be prepared in time of need. God Bless.

Spiritual warfare is certainly real. It would be a good idea to talk to your parish priest about the seriousness of these occurrences.

I have used blessed water for years. I am never out of blessed water. I feel it is a great privilege to be able to get the water.

I always bless my house and especially at bed time. I do keep it in my car and always use it. I make the sign of the cross, and tell Jesus I love Him. After saying that I say In the Name of Jesus, Satan be gone.

Thanks

Virginia
We are thinking of using holy water around our house to ward off the evil neighbors especially the ones that sit on their patio all day long and smoke cigarettes which stinks up our yard. We cannot open windows ever to air out our house.
Thank you for this wonderful and inspiring information which I wish to put into practice besides what I know of and do and faulter at times by forgetting ... besides sprinkling holy Water in the house and on my family I also put a few drops of Holy Water in a jug of water thus ensuring that it may be consumed by all who drink it and stay blessed. God bless everyone.

Do I need to put the holy water in a certain container to bring home and keep?
Hi Carissa, no, you do not need to have a certain container. It is helpful though if you mark the container as holy water so that it is remembered that it is sacred water. You can purchase holy water bottles here: https://www.catholiccompany.com/holy-water-bottles-c5631/.

I have a question & not been able to find the answer on the internet. I have a very small 2 ounce holy water container to retrieve the water from Church. At home, I took a little of the water and mixed it with a gallon of water in a clean jug. Now I have nearly a gallon. Is that acceptable? It seems to me, there should not be a problem in enlarging a supply instead of bringing gallon jugs to Church. Also, the Church font I took the water from was large approximately 25 to 50 gallon basin which appeared a little bit stagnate. Since there may be germs in it, I put one drop of bleach in my gallon of holy water to kill any germs. It seems to me that should be acceptable, but I'm not sure.
Hi Don, if you want a large amount of holy water, the best thing to do would be to buy a gallon jug of plain water, label it with your name, and ask the priest to bless your jug of water at the same time he is blessing water to be used for the fountains at the parish. This is a much better solution. Holy water is a sacramental, and what you are doing is changing it in some manner which is likely removing its effects. To use an analogy, we cannot put together a string of beads in a random order and call it a rosary. My advice is to use holy water in its original constituency without changing it if you want it to retain its blessing and work as a sacramental. That way you do not have to wonder if it is efficacious.
Have used Holy Water to bless my home and land and cars and family for many years. A few years ago, a very bad lightning storm came up. The neighbors felt the worst of the strikes must have hit the yard of the home directly in front of ours. Everyone, up and down the street had lost cable. Some lost garage door openers and printers. The neighbors where the strike hit lost their sprinkler system Everyone had some loss except us. Not a thing was lost. I know Holy Water is a wonderful blessing.

I would recommend that everyone on this post would read the New Testament all the way through… Second Timothy states that all scripture was given to us for a correction for reproof and understanding of the things of God so we would know What is right and what is wrong with our teachings .I am

Bewildered by all of the superstitions I've been reading about the Catholic Church.. didn't Jesus say to Nicodemus who was a religious ruler that even he had to be born again? And didn't Jesus Make a strong point of it by stating "truly " Truly 2 x ?
