Happy Father’s Day to all of you fathers! Now more than ever, our world is in great need of strong, loving dads who are present to their family with a loving heart. Fatherhood is a holy responsibility, because it is a reflection of God the Father. Men are called to lead and serve their families, and to pray for them—an important and beautiful task! Here is a prayer that a father can say daily for his family.
By work, we are truly able to to put to good use the talents which God has given us. Our efforts and accomplishments, combined with the joy and peace that comes from truly harnessing our individual gifts and skills, can become a great blessing to those around us, and even to the world.
Dads are wonderful, but shopping for them can be…not so wonderful. Choosing a gift can be tough, especially when you need a gift for a man. Luckily, we are not just shopping for men in general. We are shopping for D-A-D. ( Yes, he can never find his socks, but he gives his whole heart to […]
We don’t get to choose our kids. Yet as I consider our nine children, I see they were perfectly chosen. Each brings a different personality and a unique perspective to our family life. Raising a large family is not easy. Along with the different personalities and unique perspectives comes inevitable conflict and stress. There are plenty of challenges. Yet blessings abound. In anticipation of writing this blog post, I posed the following question to my children (via text message to the older ones not living at home): What is your favorite thing about growing up in a large family?
You cannot go far on the Internet these days without running into something about the decline of masculinity in our culture today. For decades the value of men, fathers, and maleness in general have been marginalized. The rise of feminism and a “me first” attitude has degraded the substance that men bring to society. Men, for their part, have taken a back seat in many ways in which they are expected to be strong leaders. As my wife said to me yesterday, “men are destined for greatness.”
How many people believe that today? Do you believe you are destined for greatness? Do you believe your husband is destined for greatness? Do you believe your son or your daughter’s husband is destined for greatness?
The Diocese of Phoenix is taking the battle for men and authentic masculinity head-on. They just released the short film below and published it on their website dedicated to restoring authentic manliness called Into the Breach. Watch and share. We are deep into a culture war; thank you Bishop Olmsted for leading men into the breech!
The Bishop of Phoenix, Thomas J. Olmsted recently released a very important document called Into the Breach: An Apostolic Exhortation to Catholic Men, my Spiritual Sons in the Diocese of Phoenix. This masterful pastoral letter is addressed to men, asking Catholic men to be men, in all that God designed for a man to be in strengthening, defending, fighting for, guiding, and fathering.
This document is so important that it deserves much attention and circulation. You should read it. You should have the men in your family read it. You should gather together a group of men from your parish or circle of friends to study and discuss it.
