The word "triptych" comes from the Greek words tri, which means "three" and ptyche, which means "fold". A triptych is a piece of artwork that has been divided into three sections or panels. The panels are connected with a hinge, so the piece can be folded at an angle. Historically, triptychs have been used to decorate Catholic altars.

This one features a roped gold frame border, and the center panel depicts the Crucifixion. Our Lady stands at the foot of the Cross on one side panel. On the other, St. Ann and Mary Magdalene mourn and pray.
